Medicare enrollment scam calls are after your Medicare number, Iowa AG warns

With open enrollment running through December 7, callers pose as Medicare or a 'fraud unit' to get your Medicare number, bank details or a payment.

In this brief: 3 sections 1 min read
    • 'Verify your number' so they can send a new Medicare card
    • Free cheek-swab cancer screening kits or medical devices
    • A 'Medicare Fraud Unit' officer saying your number was misused
    • A deadline earlier than December 7
    • A plan switch they promise won't change anything
    • Medicare does not initiate calls or texts. Real replacement cards are mailed after you request one through your Medicare account or Medicare's own line. Switching plans can change your doctors, drug coverage and out-of-pocket costs, so a promise of no changes is a red flag.
    • Hang up if a caller pressures you and don't click links in texts. Never give your Medicare number, bank details or a payment to an unexpected caller. Report suspicious calls to Medicare directly and to your state attorney general's office.
