The offer covers employees at level 70 and below in participating teams in the U.S., Canada, India and the U.K. Some organizations are offering it and others are not, depending on business priorities, customer commitments and workforce needs. Some groups, including some data center, sales and marketing staff, are reported to be excluded.
Microsoft describes it as a time-limited, voluntary program with financial support and career planning resources for people who choose to leave. It has not published payout amounts or a deadline. Eligible employees received an email with a link to their own offer details.
The roughly 60,000 figure comes from CNBC and Reuters reporting; Microsoft's own post gives no number. Microsoft had about 223,000 employees at the end of June. Not everyone eligible is expected to accept.
Microsoft offered early retirement to about 7% of its U.S. workforce in April, and cut nearly 5,000 jobs in July, mostly in its Xbox division, according to reports.
