Identity Theft & Credit Freeze Watch

Why this is recommended

Enrolling in free monitoring before a settlement deadline, freezing credit at all three bureaus plus ChexSystems and NCTUE before an account is opened, or claiming an IP PIN before a fraudulent return is filed each prevents a loss that averages $1,100 and 200 hours to unwind.

What the Tab covers

Who it is for

The 1 in 3 Americans who have had personal data exposed in a breach and the 40 million who have frozen their credit.

When it runs

Breach notifications reach victims 30 to 90 days after the incident and fraudulent accounts are opened within the first two weeks of data hitting dark web markets

Scope

State attorney general breach notification portals; HHS and SEC breach filings; Equifax, Experian and TransUnion service status and policy pages; ChexSystems, NCTUE and LexisNexis freeze rules; IRS IP PIN and refund fraud alerts; FTC IdentityTheft.gov; settlement administrator deadlines

Suggested task

The objective your Tab starts with. You can edit every line of it once the Tab is yours.

Breaches exposing Social Security numbers with the number of people affected and the free monitoring offered, credit bureau freeze and lock outages or policy changes, new synthetic identity and account takeover fraud patterns, IRS Identity Protection PIN and tax refund fraud alerts, FTC identity theft rule changes, and free credit monitoring deadlines from breach settlements, with the company and the count first.

Track identity theft risk for US consumers. Report only confirmed, source-backed items from the last 24 hours: breaches exposing Social Security numbers, driver's license numbers or bank credentials with the number of people affected, the notification timeline and any free monitoring offered; credit bureau freeze, lock or dispute outages and policy changes at Equifax, Experian and TransUnion; freeze rule changes at ChexSystems, NCTUE and LexisNexis; IRS Identity Protection PIN enrollment and refund fraud alerts; FTC and CFPB identity theft rule changes; new synthetic identity, account takeover or SIM swap patterns with a named source; and free credit monitoring enrollment deadlines from breach settlements. Prefer state attorney general portals, SEC and HHS filings, bureau status pages, IRS and FTC sources; ignore unconfirmed breach claims. Put the company and the number affected first in the title. Use high severity for a breach over 1 million people, a bureau freeze outage, or a monitoring deadline within 14 days. Return no more than 8 findings. Push each as a finding with a title, a two-sentence summary, sections for who is affected, what was exposed, what to do now, the deadline, and the source link. If nothing qualifies, push nothing and submit the run receipt.
