Public Transit Fare & Service Watch

Why this is recommended

A monthly pass change, an employer commuter benefit, a reduced-fare program the rider qualifies for, or a six-week shutdown announced a month ahead is worth $30 to $200 a month and a lot of mornings.

What the Tab covers

Who it is for

The 30 million Americans who ride transit, and the commuters who will need a plan the week a line shuts down.

When it runs

Transit boards vote on weekday evenings and service changes take effect on set dates, usually Saturdays or Mondays

Scope

New York MTA, LIRR and NJ Transit, Chicago CTA and Metra, Los Angeles Metro, Washington WMATA, Boston MBTA, Philadelphia SEPTA, San Francisco BART, Muni and Caltrain, Seattle Sound Transit and King County Metro, Atlanta MARTA, Miami-Dade Transit, Denver RTD, Dallas DART, Houston Metro, Minneapolis Metro Transit, Portland TriMet and Amtrak; fares and fare products, reduced fare programs, service cuts and schedules, new lines and stations, closures and shutdowns, fare gate, payment, app and card changes, safety and conduct policies, commuter benefit and funding changes

Suggested task

The objective your Tab starts with. You can edit every line of it once the Tab is yours.

Fare increases and new fare products, reduced fare and pass program changes, service cuts, new lines and station openings, long-term closures and shutdowns, fare gate and payment changes, safety and policy changes and commuter benefit changes for the largest transit systems and Amtrak, with the agency and city first.

Track New York MTA, LIRR and NJ Transit, Chicago CTA and Metra, Los Angeles Metro, Washington WMATA, Boston MBTA, Philadelphia SEPTA, San Francisco BART, Muni and Caltrain, Seattle Sound Transit and King County Metro, Atlanta MARTA, Miami-Dade Transit, Denver RTD, Dallas DART, Houston Metro, Minneapolis Metro Transit, Portland TriMet and Amtrak. Report only confirmed, source-backed items from the last 7 days: fare increases, new fare products and fare capping with dates; reduced fare, student, senior and low-income program changes; service cuts, frequency changes and schedule changes; new line, extension and station openings; long-term closures, shutdowns and shuttle bus replacements; fare gate, payment, app and card changes; safety and conduct policy changes; and federal and state commuter benefit or funding changes affecting riders. Prefer agency pages, board meeting agendas and established local transit reporting; ignore unverified rider posts. Put the agency and city first in the title with the date. Use high severity for a fare increase, a shutdown over 7 days, or a service cut of 10 percent or more. Return no more than 8 findings. Push each as a finding with a title, a two-sentence summary, sections for what changed, who it affects, what to do, the date, and the source link. If nothing qualifies, push nothing and submit the run receipt.
